T-Mobile began notifying its customers of a data breach that may have exposed phone numbers, call diagnostic metrics and number of lines per account.
The year 2020 ends up with another data breach. Despite pandemic and destructive economic disruption, 2020 also attempts to hold data breaches, data theft and sale, ransomware outbreaks and network infiltration.
T-Mobile security team discovered a “malicious unauthorised access” to their systems. After an investigation by leading cybersecurity forensic experts, T-Mobile found that the threat actor gained access to the telecommunications information generated by customers, known as CPNI.
“Customer proprietary network information (CPNI) as defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules was accessed. The CPNI accessed may have included phone number, number of lines subscribed to on your account and, in some cases, call-related information collected as part of the normal operation of your wireless service, ”reported T-Mobile in a data breach notification.
The data exposed in the breach includes contact numbers, call records and the number of lines on an account.
T-Mobile stated that the breach did not expose account holder’s names, physical or email addresses, financial data, credit card information, social security numbers, tax IDs, passwords, or PINs.
“We are currently notifying a small number of customers (less than 0.2%) that some information related to their account may have been illegally accessed, ” reported T-Mobile.
Users who received the text notification about the breach must be alert for suspicious texts claiming to be from T-Mobile asking for information or containing links to non-T-Mobile web pages.
The stolen information can be used by the threat actors to further target and steal sensitive information such as login names and passwords through phishing/smishing campaigns.
